Vimeo just fired "a gigantic amount of the company"

Vimeo just fired a 'gigantic' amount of staff. It’s Step 2 of the Bending Spoons playbook: first the layoffs, then the price hike. If you're a subscriber, Step 3 is going to hurt.

Vimeo just fired "a gigantic amount of the company"
Vimeo's offices are going to be a bit light on the human touch from now on

The Bending Spoons playbook has just started to hit its stride. After it's $1.38b acquisition of Vimeo at the end of 2025 it seems they have enacted step 2 of the process: Fire everyone.

Over the last 24hrs Vimeo staff have started posting on LinkedIn (here and here) the expected, but still difficult news that they're being let go.

Current indications would suggest it's a substantial number of the roughly 900-1000 employees.

Of course this is no surprise. Previous acquisitions by Bending Spoons have led to anywhere from 75-100% of employees being shown the door:

1. Filmic (Acquired 2022)

  • 100% fired
  • Bending Spoons fired the entire original team (including the founder and CEO) shortly after the acquisition. The product is now maintained entirely by the centralized Italian team.

2. Evernote (Acquired late 2022)

  • 98-100% of US/Chile staff fired
  • They effectively closed all original offices and moved development to Europe.

3. WeTransfer (Acquired July 2024)

  • 75% Fired
  • In September 2024, Bending Spoons CEO Luca Ferrari confirmed they would lay off 75% of WeTransfer's staff to create a "smaller, more sharply focused" organization.

4. Hopin / StreamYard (Acquired 2024)

  • Almost everyone (including me)
  • Reports indicate that "nearly all" of the existing staff from the Hopin and StreamYard assets were let go shortly after the deal closed.

So what comes next?

Next comes the price rise. We don't know when exactly, but we do expect it to be in the region of a 80-100% increase. Bending Spoons have a huge return they need to make and the Vimeo customer is who it's coming from.

This kind of behaviour by a business really makes me Livid 😉
